I was wondering today if more people in North America have read Born to Run than have heard the song. And btw, if you are in need of some serious energy of the musical variety, The Boss serves it up with muscle in the video clip. But back to the book. You know the story. The Tarahumara tribe likes to run. Which is rather like saying that Springsteen likes to play his Telecaster. The Tarahumara eat chia seeds and maize for their energy. The gel mixture is called pinole. And since I cannot play and sing like Bruce, I am experimenting with chia seeds in my diet to see if they might magically allow this tramp to run like he was born to it.
Dietary changes are very subtle. The antihisis would be a sugar or caffeine buzz. This is not that. Nor is it like a synthetic, engineered rush from a gel, shot or liquid. I have been adding raw chia seeds to my morning post-workout meal for over a month now. I like it. Here is a link from Dr. Weil. One from Race Day Nutrition, and from the No-Meat Athlete. In combination with whey protein powder and soy milk, it provides both a quality recovery meal and caloric content (volume) to get me thru the morning. Later today for the first time I will be testing the gel version, which is as simple as adding water and lime. I think I am going to need it as this mornings Yoga session immediately followed by 1,000 meters in the pool has already necessitated the building of a second pot of French Roast. We have a track session scheduled for four, so I should be recovered, rested and (gel providing) ready to go by then.
Not to sound all natural and homeopathic, I also ordered some First Endurance product today to test on Sunday's brick and then use for the Chelanman Half-Iron in nine days. The race plan is for 700 calories of EFS on the bike in liquid form and then 300 on the run in gel form. The results of which, in blog form, you are guaranteed a week from Monday. I am undecided on video at this point.
In other news, we 'cemented' the partnership yesterday and will be staging the grand opening of the Bainbridge Athletic Club CompuTrainer Multi-Rider Center on September 1. You will be hearing A LOT about that in the upcoming weeks, rest assured.
The recipe: Bite sized shredded wheat > Raw chia seeds > Whey protein powder > Organic soy milk. I usually top with berries or banana, but was out today, sorry.
Come on Wendy.

I saw a similar recipe in Frazz.
I'd like to try the raw chia seeds. Where could one find them locally? Also, will you be teaching spinning tomorrow (7/8)?
Ah, Willow, you can find them locally at Willows down by the Bookstore. Yes, I will be there in the morning, set list coming together as we speak (new NIN, Beck, Soundgarden, Police...)
Lots of new fun stuff upcoming. Stay tuned and don't fret about sleep. Just do it.
FW, Missed that one. I met Jeff Mallett at the Seattle Bike Show a couple of years ago and he is a riot. Great guy. Here is link to his ultra cool site: http://www.jefmallett.com/
My virgin attempt at pinole was, well, like anything else done for the first time. Stephanie said that she has never tasted burnt steel belted radials, so that is all I have to offer as testimony at this point in the marketing campaign. All I know is that I have been eating it all day and I can't stop dancing. Frazz rocks.
